Cultural History
The site hosting Floriade 2012 is rich in cultural historical, archaeological elements. The oldest archaeological finds date back to the Mesolithic Period (Mid-Stone Age). Floriade 2012 considers it of primary importance to celebrate this seam of cultural history, and these elements will be showcased at the park.
The still visible elements of the park's cultural history include a cluster of burial mounds dating back to the Bronze Age - Iron Age (2000 B.C. - 12 B.C.) Remains can also be seen of a Mediaeval cattle fold and a Mediaeval fortification system (11the - 13th century) that protected the dwellings and fields from free ranging cattle. The 20th century St. Jans Chapel is an important historical feature of the Floriade site. The foundations of its protected 14th century predecessor, demolished in 1811, are still clearly visible.
